Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to contest certain calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
