Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
