The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
